Is 'Spiritual but not Religious' just a cop-out for commitment?

Religion
I've been hearing this phrase a lot lately, and while I understand the appeal of personal spirituality, I can't help but wonder if it often serves as an excuse to avoid the structure, community, or even the challenging doctrines that organized religion often entails. Am I missing a deeper perspective here, or is there a valid point to this observation?
