Solo Japan Trip: Best eSIM/SIM Card for Data & Calls?

I'm heading to Japan solo for two weeks next month and completely stuck on the best mobile data solution. Should I go with an eSIM, a local physical SIM, or a pocket Wi-Fi device? So many conflicting reviews out there, and I really need something reliable for maps and translations. What's everyone else using these days that works well?
