Why is my VS Code suddenly lagging so badly on a new React project?

I just started a new React project in VS Code, and it's incredibly slow to open, compile, and even type. My previous projects run perfectly fine. I've tried restarting, clearing cache, and reinstalling extensions but nothing helps. Am I missing a critical setting for new projects, or is there a known issue with recent updates that I'm unaware of?
